Sterling Silver vs 18K Gold Vermeil: Which Is Right for You? | ELA-NUR

Gold vs silver jewellery- mixed metal stacking rings

Sterling Silver vs 18k Gold Vermeil: Which Is Right for You?

If you have browsed the ELA-NUR collection, you’ll have noticed that every piece is crafted in one of two finishes: 925 Sterling Silver or 18k Gold Vermeil. Both are beautiful. Both are made from 100% precious metals. But their distinct differences might make one a better choice than the other for certain styles and occasions.

This guide breaks down everything you need to know so you can shop with confidence.

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is one of the most timeless precious metals in jewellery making. Each piece is stamped with a ‘925’ hallmark- meaning it is crafted from 92.5% pure silver mixed with a small amount of added metals for increased durability.

At ELA-NUR we take the extra step of coating every silver piece in rhodium- a rare precious metal that helps to enhance shine, durability and prevents tarnishing. The end result is sleek, cool-toned jewellery that's built to last.

Sterling silver is loved for its clean, classic look- as well as being hypoallergenic, sustainable and timeless. With centuries of history- silver will never go out of style.

What is 18K Gold Vermeil?

Gold vermeil has a base of sterling silver, layered with over 2.5 microns of real gold- around 5x thicker than standard gold-plating. At ELA-NUR, we use 18-karat gold- m creating a unique, rich radiance and glow.

This makes our gold vermeil jewellery far more premium that standard gold plating, which is typically a minute later of gold applied over cheaper base metals like brass or copper- commonly known to tarnish and change colour easily.

Our gold vermeil pieces are precious, hypoallergenic, ethically crafted, and extremely durable when cared for. The finish is rich, warm and unmistakably luxurious- delivering the look and feel of solid gold at a fraction of the price.

Which Lasts Longer?

Both sterling silver and gold vermeil are durable precious metals designed for everyday wear - but they do require slightly different care.

Sterling silver: Reverse any discolouration with a gentle silver polishing cloth. Store your silver pieces in the complimentary jewellery pouch included with every ELA-NUR order to help prevent tarnish between wears.

Gold vermeil: Should be kept away from water, perfumes, and lotions to preserve the gold layer. When cared for properly, ELA-NUR gold vermeil pieces can last many years. Store them in your pouch and polish gently with a soft dry cloth to maintain their glow.

Which Should you Choose? Styling by Occasion

Sterling silver is cool-toned, effortless, and ideal for everyday wear. It pairs easily with casual outfits and is perfect for stacking.  It also works beautifully with diamonds and light pearls for a clean, modern look.

Gold vermeil is warmer and more elevated, making it perfect for dressier occasions. It softens the look of diamonds and pairs well with luminous pearls. It’s also a go-to for gifting- especially pieces like our engraved coin pendant necklace or personalised signet ring for birthdays, anniversaries, Mother’s Day, or Christmas.

If someone wears silver daily, a silver piece with complimentary engraving can feel just as special, and more personal.

Can you Mix Silver and Gold?

Absolutely. Mixing silver and gold tones is one of the biggest jewellery trends right now. Often referred to as dual- tone or mixed metal jewellery. Mixing jewellery creates a modern, effortless look. ELA-NUR pieces are intentionally designed to complement each other across both finishes.

Both are Backed by a 3-Year Warranty

Whichever finish you choose, every piece is backed by a 3-year warranty covering and manufacturing-related defects. Because when you’re investing in fine jewellery you deserve to feel confident in what you're buying.

We also offer free delivery over £100, 10% off your first order, bespoke jewellery packaging and same-day engraving on personalised pieces.
